Moonlighting unacceptable – Following Wipro, IT startup Happiest Minds fired employees for taking on extra work. According to the employer, moonlighting is not permitted because it violates the job contract. Employees that work for one company full-time and a second job are considered to be moonlighting. Many IT firms have labelled it as “illegal” and “unethical,” including IBM and Wipro. Rishad Premji, the chairman of Wipro, actually sparked the debate by calling it “cheating, plain and simple.”
According to Happiest Minds’ executive vice chairman Joseph Anantharaju, his company has been extremely clear with its staff about the fact that it will not accept dual jobs.
Anantharaju asserts that moonlighting poses risks to employee safety and raises questions about workers’ commitment to giving their whole attention to clients’ needs and delivering results. He asserted that his employer had identified instances of employees working second jobs, and that they had all been sacked without delay to spread the news throughout the organization.
“There is no real way to know that, even if it is only a short while. We did it, and it is obvious that you cannot be working two jobs at once. You might opt to spend the weekend teaching in a different school if you want to do any unrelated volunteer activities. But you need to give Happiest Minds and working out here your full attention “said he.
