After partnering with Austria-based ALPLApharma, which specialises in plastic packaging for pharmaceuticals, Spanish packaging firm Inden Pharma plans to expand its business to India.

In order to strengthen their position in the global pharmaceutical packaging market, the companies have agreed to begin certified production of bottles, containers, and closures in clean rooms in March. The companies intend to produce around 800 million pharmaceutical packaging products annually by 2023, with a threefold increase over the next five years.

“In the future, it is also planned to expand the business to other places outside of Europe, such as India, the United States, or Central and South America,” Inden Pharma said in a statement.

Inden Pharma’s standard products will be integrated into the joint catalogue of ALPLApharma and Inden Pharma products, totaling more than 150 articles. “Our international customers benefit from a greater variety of plants, proximity, high flexibility, and the service and quality in deliveries that has become customary in recent years,” said Juan Guillem González, owner and CEO of Inden Pharma.

ALPLApharma will bring production sites in Greece and Poland into the collaboration, which will be supplemented by Inden Pharma’s two facilities in Spain and an additional one the two companies are jointly building in Germany. The collaboration includes two ALPLApharma production sites in Greece (Koropi) and Poland (yrardów), as well as two Inden Pharma plants in Ibi, north of Alicante, and a jointly built fifth plant in Germany (Markdorf), which is set to begin production in June.

Inden Pharma’s sales have tripled in the last four years, reaching 30.5 million euros in 2022. Inden Pharma sells over 550 million containers per year in 35 countries across five continents. Since entering the rapidly expanding pharmaceutical packaging market in 2016, ALPLA has steadily expanded into new countries, technologies, and product categories.

The Indian pharmaceutical packaging industry is also rapidly expanding. According to Mordor Intelligence, a market research firm, the pharmaceutical packaging market in India is expected to grow at a 6.8 percent annualised rate between 2021 and 2026.
