A 400-seat library only for women at Jharkhand’s Gumla

14 July, 2023 – Library only for women – Gumla, a disadvantaged aspirational area of Jharkhand, now has a 400-seat library dedicated solely to women! The library has about 7000 books and a computer hall, as well as seven discussion rooms. Not only will members come to read books, but the library will also feature a female-only staff, including female security officers, librarians, and cleaning personnel. 

The two-story library is named after Savitri Bai Phule, a 19th-century female teacher, social reformer, educationalist, and poet who is also regarded as the first Indian female teacher.

Inauguration 

Dr Rameshwar Oraon, Jharkhand’s Finance Minister, inaugurated the Savitri Bai Phule Mahila Pustakalay Gumla last week. He met with female pupils from the district during the launch. Dr. Oraon also praised the Gumla district administration, particularly deputy commissioner Sushant Gaurav, who was instrumental in establishing the library. 

“This is a great thought and a remarkable initiative,” the minister said at the inauguration. This is a good project that I hope will be emulated by others. The library will help females gain access to a variety of books. They can come here and read books for as long as they like, and they can even borrow books to read at home.” 

Aspirational dictrict books Gumla is the first district in Jharkhand’s tribal-dominated state to have a state-run library for women. The 400-person capacity library contains books for numerous competitive tests and vocations, as well as literature on various themes and biographies and motivational novels. There is seating with sofas and tables for students to sit and read comfortably.  

Computer 

For pupils who want to access knowledge and information digitally, there is a computer hall with a total of 8 machines. The library will soon have wi-fi internet access. 

Charges 

While there is currently a monthly cost of Rs 200 for library members, students from extremely poor backgrounds, the disabled, and orphans can enjoy library membership for free.
