Threads app a ‘high-risk’ bet, says Instagram head Adam Mosseri

Threads app – Instagram is making a major leap into microblogging with Threads, a new social media platform that wants to compete with Twitter. According to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, the decision to launch Threads was met with heated disagreement within the company. The team debated whether to integrate it into the main Instagram stream or add it as a separate tab, but ultimately decided that a standalone app would be the best solution.

In an interview with The Verge, Mosseri highlighted that, unlike Twitter’s platform, the traditional “post and comment model” of Instagram’s feed does not properly enable public dialogue. Incorporating Threads as a distinct tab within the existing app would have further complicated the user experience. “Launching a separate app is inherently more difficult because you have to build a user base from scratch,” he conceded, “but the potential rewards are much greater if you succeed.”

Threads give users a larger place for generating public dialogues, all while keeping Instagram’s primary focus on photo-sharing. Instagram hopes to keep its identity as a visual sharing platform while catering to users’ need for more robust communication tools by splitting text updates and discussions into a separate app.

“Given the volatility and unpredictability evident on other platforms, there might be an opportunity for us,” Mosseri said of the possible opening. If stability becomes an issue, or if major product changes occur, we may be able to compete in an area that previously appeared difficult.”

Initial indications suggest that Threads is making progress in drawing new users. According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, Instagram’s parent company, in a Threads post, the app received 30 million sign-ups just hours after its launch. However, only time will tell whether Threads will be as successful as Mosseri hopes.
